Ken majored in Economics at the University of Saskatchewan and distinguished himself as a very talented defenceman. Ken played for the Huskies for 2 seasons, 1985-86 and 1986-87, scoring an impressive 54 points across 54 games. He is proud of his time with the team and having the experience of the Huskies being recognized as one of the best in Canada by going to the nationals and almost winning the championship in 1987.
After excelling with the Huskies, Ken played two seasons with the Canadian National team and subsequently went on to sign a free agent contract with the Washington Capitals in the NHL. After two seasons with the Capitals AHL affiliate Baltimore Skipjacks, he played one season in Sweden before rejoining Canada’s National Team.
Ken played for the Canadian National Team three years: 1989, 1990, and 1994. During this time, Ken was given the opportunity to play for Team Canada in the 1994 Olympics. Although Canada was an underdog in the Olympic Games, Ken remembers the team pulling together to win the silver medal. The final was an exciting affair that ended in a tie, with Canada ending up losing to Sweden in a shootout. As a young athlete competing in the Olympics, Ken was grateful for the experience of travelling all over the world on the team and reflected on how it is a “special honour to play for your country.”
Ken and his wife, Maureen, have seven children and three granddaughters. Ken’s children have found success in a variety of different fields, including nursing, law, and business professions. His children were raised playing all types of sports, and Ken coached hockey for over 20 years. He also has a son who is carrying on his interest in hockey by currently playing for the Seattle Thunderbirds. Ken has been settled in Alberta for the past 31 years and has worked in the family grocery business. He currently spends his spare time with his family and flying his own plane.
